Spotting Trafficking Victims: How Rideshare Drivers Can Help
In the past decade, rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft have become increasingly popular. These rideshare companies are app based, and allow for many people to call for a ride right from their own phones. Last year alone, one third of people in the United States had used rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft.

While these rideshare apps have some safety concerns of themselves, they may be a very valuable resource in helping to spot and save victims of human trafficking. One company, Uber, has taken the risk seriously. The company has decided to train its drivers to spot the signs of human trafficking. As they see nearly 35% of our population each year, they can be a huge help in saving lives and spotting trafficking victims.

As they exclaim on their website, Uber realizes the unique situation they are in when dealing with this issue. Polaris and the McCain Institute held conferences last year in Washington D.C. in honor of World Human Trafficking Awareness Day. They helped teach and inform drivers about the reach human trafficking has, and the warning signs they can look for while driving for Uber.
The idea of training Uber drivers has spread. Throughout April of 2020, Uber drivers in cities across Texas will be undergoing the same informative training. These training sessions will include ways to spot trafficking victims, how to approach dangerous situations with possible traffickers also being present, and resources to turn to if a possible situation is spotted.
